Retention of minority College students with Learning Disabilities Michael Anthony Galeana California State University, Northridge ELPS 601HE Tuesday, December 09, 2014 Abstract This research will discuss the retention rate among college students of color with learning disabilities. Majority of this paper will consist of published articles, reports, and research that address the retention rate with students of color that have been diagnosed with a learning disability. For the purpose of this paper, the learning disability that will be researched will be attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD). The articles, reports, and research provided in this paper have addressed the issueâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Attrition is the rate in which students disenroll from a post-secondary institution, which was defined in Oââ¬â¢Keeffeââ¬â¢s (2013) article. Past research has suggested that the lack of participation and the culture shock of some students have contributed in such high attrition rates (O Keeffe, 2013). From the outcomes of these researches, universities have implemented programs to retain and increa se retention rates. However, when it comes to attrition rates, it seems that one population of students goes unnoticed. With the increase of student enrollment, students with Learning Disabilities enrolling in colleges have also increased. The average increase in this population has been 40%, which is a big jump for many of the universities as stated by Reid and Knight (2006) However, it is the two year colleges, which has jumped to 71% of its incoming student as indicated by McCleary-Jones (2007), has had the most dramatic increase. There are many factors that could have attributed to the college enrollment increase of students with learning disabilities. Introduction of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination against those that are disabled, ensured that reasonable accommodations where made for students with learning disabilities, and the demystification of the abilities of disabled people have played a factor in increase enrollment of college students, whic h was mentioned by Reid, and Knight (2006).
